A Good Time Was Had By All

Thanks to everybody for everything they did to make this Race Weekend a joyous and memorable one.

I love all of you and I think I need another couple of pints of water to get replenished, still.

Hot time in the old town...?

Make of it what you will, but the prognosticators are calling for partly cloudy skies with a high of 87 on Race day. Pack your favorite flavor of sunscreen.

Non-Sequitur South will be two (Pert and yours truly), as T3 is working all weekend. There is a good chance that we'll be able to drive up on Friday, if that isn't a problem. Don't plan to make a fuss; we'll bring stuff if we're there at a decent hour. What's the ETA on Jo Jo?

P & K Lease 2br/1b in Downtown Gocktown

K's plan is to be there with visits to Eva & Agatha, perhaps by plane, periodically. We will go up after Eva & Pert return from the 500. My head is so full of stuff I have trouble articulating--well I guess that would be keying.
One trip to Evaville will be for the upcoming play.
There is more work here (GA) than I want to spend my time doing now. I can take care of P much easier in this apt. We both have friends there who will come visit & King and/or JoJo can come down. Biggest drawback is being farther from Eva & Agatha, but I need to cut down on space to manage and maintain now.
Guest apartments may be rented in the tower complex for only $50.00 a night. So we could still all get together for large gatherings if we wanted. Winter holidays come to mind.
I plan to transfer bills, business, etc., and make that the main residence.
PS: I got a pre-pay cell phone. Ludites can adapt after all.
AMENITIES: 1 bedroom, 1 bath, accessible fitness complex with recumbent bike, stepper, elliptical thing, universal weight machine, treadmill, Nordic track, regular stationary bike, hot tub, sauna, steam room. There is an outdoor Olympic? Pool with chairs and umbrellas. An enclosed courtyard a community room with giant TV and wifi plus a couple computers. All this stuff is accessible with no stairs to negotiate and there are grocery, hardware, bookstore, shopping with walking distance.
We will look up those Shy-Drager sites later and I can make sure P does what he needs to.
Right now I'm sorting through what to take so I can manage all the business from there.
Everything else is yet to be firmed up.(ie: renting this, selling this,keeping this for vacations.)
I'm not moving furniture. I have bought a new queen and Gock will send me a hide-a-bed after race w/e is over. Other stuff I plan to buy new. Sort of a snake shedding it's skin type of thing.

Be prepared in July to select anything in this house you want to keep.

I think I'm gonna sit this one out.

P & K Order Two New Showers

A guy is coming on the 27th to start work. A regular size fiber glass shower downstairs in K's room and replace the P house bathtub with a white porceline tile walk-in shower filling the same space as the tub does now. All with grab bars. I am so happy. All baths will be upstairs after that.

Seems like I've been seeing a lot of flooble messages about frustrations when trying to post. Is anyone still suffering from that? Is it just new messages, or is it comments, too? If you can't post a comment, put some data in the Chatterbox, and I'll see if I can figure out what the problem is. I know that the Google Geeks replaced a troublesome router last week, and that may have been the source of some of the issues.

After all remuneration and benifits were settled, Rog's uneasiness wouldn't let him rest, so while I was up north he and P went and laid all the past financial details regarding G's place out for the powers that be. Nice Guy Buys The Farm

Streaming music: Squeezebox may be it

The Gockster and I have been waiting for the way to play any music we own, anywhere in the house, with an elegant interface. This will get cheaper, but the more I read about it, the more I want it.

It's a little 802.11g compliant unit that can stream music, either from your "music server" (in my case, the PC where I've ripped all of my CDs, and most of Gock's) or from any of the internet radio stations.

Some notes -

This can be run (driven) from any of three (or more) places:

1. From the unit itself, attached to your stereo or powered speakers. Admittedly, with only a two line display, it has its limitations
2. From the server that houses all of your music (mp3, OGG, wav, whatever)
3. From *any* PC on your network, wireless or otherwise
   

You can add music to the playlist from any PC on your network. In other words, if Gock comes over, and has something on his laptop he wants to share, the server can add the songs on his PC, which can be streamed from there through the network to this unit.

By the way, the software to run the server (SlimServer) is free, and open source. It can be downloaded and run just like any other music player (takes a while to scan all of your music, if you have a lot). There is also an application (SoftSqueeze) that can be downloaded and run on a PC to emulate the interface of the actual Squeezebox unit and its remote control, so you can really take it for a test drive before using it.

The client and server recognize and can create playlists, if you're into that. They can each search by Artist, Album, Song, or Genre, to the extent that you have your tags correct on your mp3 files (should be automagic if you're ripped them from CD).

Somebody stop me before I drop money on this. That's the hiccup, by the way. It costs $300 for the wireless version, or $250 if you can live with wiring it to your router or hub. There are other (cheaper) alternatives out there, but this one looks like the coolest by far in its price range. I already want two of them.

G & G Enter UCNH on January 5, 2006. All is Well.

P's big brother and younger brother, (not youngest, he has a job) came down to help move G & G to UCNH on January 5. They all spent 3 days doing paper work for financing of said home etc. Well, big brother was so disturbed by the whole thing he was sick a lot--the family syndrome--and had to stay at the B'ville house packing dishes. As of Jan 14, when k, in order to make sure the boys had taken everything G & G might want or need, visited twice, G & G were doing well and seemed happy and Sister smiled and talked to k more than in years before. Ma recognized k, and was happy to see her, but, upon being questioned, didn't know exactly who k was.
The brothers left Sun. Jan. 8, in the AM. k spent last Wed. Thur. Fri. packing, sorting, disposing, donating at the B'ville house. One more day and it will be ready for big brother to move to the Hemptown house for his and the grandkids' use.
The B'ville house cannot be sold for three months. The administration at the entity in which it sits has, by contract, right of first refusal and also 3 months to decide yea or nay.
Upon completion of all paper work etc. having to do with G & G' move, which should be done by the end of Jan., P & k plan, eventually, to flee to the Florida Panhandle for R & R. (The want to be in GA. for Eva's latest performance, which starts on 2/17 and runs for 2 weekends.)
k is thrilled to be staying at Wildwood and feels like a new woman.
P has been back on Prozac for a couple of weeks and, it seems to k, is much perkier. He has returned to exercising regularly and is reading a new Truman biography.
Except for despondency over the Colts and the Bears, k & P are deliriously(dammit, doesn't this thing have a spell checker?) Oh, never mind, I found it.
So, all is well at the compound.
A note on everyday living:
k, while cleaning out the fridg in a rare fit of energy, asks P about some sour cream that has been here since t'gvg. P says, keep it in case the kids come. k throws it out, but only because she recalls Eva's charming habit of checking expiration dates.

Were we supposed to cover this guy?

No More Presents

I'm changing my vote. I realize that it's most likely too late, because everyone probably has done what everyone plans to do; so, I guess this message will serve only either to confuse things or to make some one feel bad or annoyed. Fine, then my Christmas role will have been played, and I can relax the rest of the holiday.

I don't think each person should buy a gift. Screw this whole gift thing. Gock's Thing shouldn't be spending her money (or her father's or mother's money) for frickin' presents. Bringing one gift--even a $10.00 one--might be difficult for some persons (for example, the hillbillies in Atlanta would need to bring six gifts, not to mention the last minute running around), and that's just getting out of hand. Let's play Yankee Swap with the little pieces of crap Koala and Pert have already got--and there are plenty of pieces of crap lying around the trailer (making, by the way, any trip to the dollar store they might have already made hardly necessary and a big waste of time). Hell, let's just shop for presents at Koala's and Pert's: it's a treasure trove of Yankee Swap items.

Sorry not to have thought this through more thoroughly before I put in my two cents earlier, and sorry I brought up the topic at all. I'm an idiot (but I don't need to tell you that, do I?)

So, what's the plan? JoJo and I intend to bring Christmas gifts for the little cracker chillrin. Will Agatha's Things be in attendance? We don't want anybody, including K&P, buying us stuff. Really. We just want your company, nothing else, except maybe your company a little funnier and more entertaining than the last time we saw you. If we bring gifts for the adults, will it be okay? If we don't bring gifts for the adults, will it be okay? Is there a custom that you all have developed? We'll be in Morganton very late Friday, the 23rd--really very early Saturday, the 24th (2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m, depending on weather and flight delays) and be leaving early Monday, the 26th, probably 7:00 a.m. at the latest.

I got porked on Thanksgiving

Just a few of the many things that I'm thankful for after this weekend:

• Pert and koALa's continued love and hospitality every time their compound is overrun by crumb-snatching little bastards. We love you and appreciate everything you do.
• Gock's pork roast idea and recipe. That was just the thing to give this Thanksgiving a distinction that will keep it remembered as something other than "just another holiday".
• The visit from KT1 and KT3. I must admit that my first instinct is "Oh, shit. Now I have to bring up my energy, be friendly, entertaining, and charming." (Not that I succeed on any count) However, I end up being incredibly glad that they visit, and wish they didn't have to leave. They're funny, loving, and tremendously entertaining.
  
• That GT1 is taking dance actively again. It's wonderful to see her light up about something that she loves. Kudo's (improper apostrophe acknowledged) to Gock for managing to make it happen.
• Agatha's influence on the team: My better half brings a...something...to the procedings that puts just enough sugar to the recipe to keep the whole weekend sweet. Thanks, Baby.
• A Sunday morning conversation with O Mr Leonard. It's good to hear his voice, and good to see the way the 'rents get all excited when he calls. The bastard.
• Mostly, it's the fact that I can spend a three or four day weekend with my family, and end it genuinely excited about the holiday next month.
  

Kick in with your Christmas plans when you have them, and I'll put together some kind of a travel grid to track us all, whether you're planning on descending upon koALaville this Xmas or not.

koALA Reassures the EvaDewer, and Potpourri

I've never thought of myself as the member of the tribe to be most needful of mollycoddling, (see KOF), but apparently I've sold myself short. I received a call from koALa and Pert this morning, ultimately geared towards giving me an opportunity to vent any misgivings I may have with respect the pending purge of worldly goods and land that make up The Compound. So I did.

While I've never made a secret of my affinity for the family farm, I recognize that it is the people that reside in and around the abode that make it what it is. I know that, even if I had the means to offer fair market for the land, it wouldn't make any sense, as it stops being what it is to me when the occupants abandon it -er- move. I'm aware of at least some of the many benefits that come with the move, and support it. Emotionally, I'm probably reluctant because I don't want things to change, as if keeping things the status quo would prevent other things from progressing. Obviously, on a conscious level, that level of ostrich syndrome would be pointless, and in fact potentially harmful. So sell the shit and move already. Don't forget that herb, though.

Once talked off of *that* ledge, koALa got the opportunity to assure me that the shoulder injury I suffered during tennis yesterday is not likely to be a torn rotator cuff, as was my fear. Though I won't know for sure until one of the local docs performs the appropriate tests, I am mostly convinced that the problem will neither be with me that long, nor require surgery. So there's that.

On a more positive note, I picked up a couple of tickets for the Braves' second playoff game (this Thursday) for me and Pert. We'll be there to see their annual collapse firsthand. I don't know if any of you have been to a park for a playoff game, but there's a really cool vibe that comes with it, at least in my limited experience. I think it has something to do with the bunting (the decoration, not the batting choice).

Well, Doesn't This Just Bite!

The Taurus, after a new fuel filter, new tank of gas, oilchange & filter, still shows check engine light. Computer at repair shop says #1 cylinder missfiring and will do new plugs & wires for $300.00 which may fix it. Doesn't feel like plugs to me or pa though. All things considered,(mainly,I must have a car I can rely on) we decided to price new cars. What is available, that we can afford, is a Focus wagon for 12000.00 plus our car. And I SAVE the three hundred. I'd wanted to get a Prius, but initial cost, even with Agatha's help, precludes that decision. We get the car tomorrow. I had hoped to drive the Taurus till I died, but, well, I guess I'm glad I didn't.
